High Acuity

RFDS provides a High Acuity service, capable of providing care for critically ill patients who otherwise would fall outside the non-emergency clinical practice protocols.

Critically ill patients who may be unstable, require ongoing active clinical management and/or ventilated support (Mechanically ventilated high acuity patients with a GCS under 13 who have a registered medical practitioner escort may be transported via NEPT where authorised by the treating medical practitioner.)

Critically ill patients requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) during transport (All patients with mechanical circulatory support must have either an appropriate medical perfusionist or a registered nurse division 1, and a registered medical practitioner escort. The circulatory assist device must be loaded by the NEPT staff or with an appropriate lifting device, as medical and nursing staff at the sending or accepting hospital will be unable to assist with the maneuver of equipment into the vehicle.)

Critically ill patients requiring intra-aortic balloon pump support (IABP) during transport (An intra-aortic balloon pump must be supervised by either an appropriate medical per fusionist or a registered nurse division 1 with critical care qualification (who has current (annual) competency in the make and model of the balloon pump being used), and a registered medical practitioner.)

Our High Acuity service is crewed by a Patient Transport Officer (PTO) and a Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN), and can be incorporated in the CPAV platform for complex or bariatric patients. Our High Acuity vehicles are all compliant with the appropriate equipment and consumables necessary to deliver the patient and client needs.

We can also facilitate and manage doctor and equipment supplied transport requests.
